Laser Bandage — Cold Sore & Ulcer Treatment
Fotona dual-wavelength laser technology seals and decontaminates open lesions — dramatically reducing healing time and pain. Best treated at the very first sign of an outbreak.

Why Dr. Albadran Treats Cold Sores & Ulcers with Laser
Cold sores (herpes labialis) and oral ulcers are painful, disruptive, and — for most patients — met with over-the-counter creams that do little more than manage symptoms. Laser therapy works differently: it addresses the lesion directly, at the tissue level, rather than just covering it.
Dr. Albadran holds the ALD Dental Laser Standard Level certification from the Academy of Laser Dentistry, and applies that training to a fast, in-office protocol designed to shorten an outbreak rather than simply wait it out.

About the Treatment
What Is the Laser Bandage Protocol?
The Fotona dual-wavelength laser system combines two technologies already used elsewhere in your care: the Er:YAG laser to gently seal and decontaminate the lesion, and the Nd:YAG laser in photobiomodulation (PBM) mode to calm inflammation and accelerate the body’s own healing response.
Rather than just masking discomfort, this approach targets the lesion directly — reducing the bacterial and viral load at the site while stimulating the surrounding tissue to repair itself faster.
Why “bandage” is the right word: The Er:YAG pass creates a protective, sterile seal over the open lesion — similar to what a bandage does, but from the inside out. That seal reduces pain almost immediately and protects the site while the photobiomodulation step does the deeper healing work.
The Two-Step Protocol
Seal First, Then Heal
Unlike some laser protocols where photobiomodulation comes first, cold sore treatment works in the opposite order — the lesion is sealed before the healing-acceleration step begins.
Er:YAG Laser Bandage
The lesion is gently sealed and decontaminated — reducing pain and protecting the site almost immediately.
Nd:YAG Photobiomodulation
With the Genova handpiece, gentle laser energy calms inflammation and accelerates the tissue’s natural healing response.
Backed by Clinical Research
Laser and photobiomodulation therapy for cold sores (recurrent herpes labialis) is one of the more thoroughly studied applications of low-level laser therapy in dentistry, with a growing multi-decade research base.
A randomized controlled trial published in Photomedicine and Laser Surgery found that low-level laser therapy produced a clear effect on both initial healing and the length of the recurrence-free period between outbreaks, with no observed side effects.[1]
A 2018 systematic review (Lasers in Medical Science) evaluating six clinical trials found consistent support for laser therapy’s effectiveness in managing and reducing recurrence of herpes labialis, compared to standard care.[2]
A 2024 randomized controlled trial (Clinical Oral Investigations) found that photobiomodulation therapy reduced pain significantly faster than acyclovir cream — the standard antiviral treatment — reinforcing the pain-relief benefit specifically, even where healing-time results vary study to study.[3]
Dr. Albadran discusses this evidence directly with you at your consultation, including realistic expectations for your specific outbreak and stage of healing.
The Evaluation
When to Come In — and Why Timing Matters
Cold sores respond best to laser treatment at the very first sign of an outbreak — the tingling, itching, or burning sensation that precedes a visible lesion (the prodromal stage). The sooner treatment begins, the shorter and milder the outbreak tends to be.
- Prodromal stage — tingling or burning before a lesion appears is the ideal time to start
- Early vesicle stage — still highly responsive to laser treatment
- Crusted or later-stage lesions — can still benefit, though results are typically less dramatic
- Recurring outbreaks — some patients find treatment extends the time between episodes
What to Expect
Your Treatment, Step by Step
Evaluation
Dr. Albadran examines the lesion and confirms laser treatment is appropriate for your stage of outbreak.
Er:YAG Laser Bandage
The lesion is gently sealed and decontaminated — most patients notice pain relief right away.
Nd:YAG Photobiomodulation
The Genova handpiece delivers gentle laser energy to calm inflammation and accelerate healing.
Recovery
Most patients see noticeably faster healing over the following days, with reduced pain throughout.
