Understanding Your Situation

Gum disease is serious.
Traditional treatment doesn’t have to be.

😰

Fear of gum surgery

The idea of cutting, stitches, and weeks of recovery keeps many patients from seeking the treatment they need — and their gums get worse.

🔬

Conventional treatment has real limits

Metal instruments cannot reach micro-calculus inside dentinal tubules. Traditional SRP produces repair — not regeneration. Pockets come back.

Time and disruption

Multiple appointments, recovery periods, dietary restrictions for weeks — traditional perio treatment is disruptive to your life.

The Solution

What is TwinLight Gum Treatment?

Fotona Laser in Use

Laser-Assisted Periodontal Regeneration

TwinLight Gum Treatment (TGT) is an FDA-cleared, laser-assisted periodontal procedure that uses two complementary laser wavelengths working together to achieve what conventional treatment simply cannot: true regeneration of the bone, ligament, and tissue around your teeth.

There is no cutting. No stitches. No scalpel. Most patients return to normal activities the same day.

Nd:YAG

Removes Diseased Tissue

Selectively targets and removes 100% of the diseased pocket lining while leaving healthy tissue intact. Kills bacteria and viruses.

Er:YAG

Cleans & Prepares the Root

Removes calculus, opens dentinal tubules with photoacoustic streaming, and prepares the root surface at the molecular level for new attachment.

Side by Side

TGT vs. Traditional Treatment

Traditional Gum Treatment
TwinLight Gum Treatment (TGT) FDA CLEARED 2017
Technique
Metal scraping + possible scalpel
Dual laser — under 10 microns of impact
Surgery
Cutting and stitches often required
No scalpel. No stitches. No cutting.
Recovery
Days to weeks of restricted activity
Return to normal activity same day
Outcome
Repair — scar tissue fills the pocket
True regeneration — new bone, new attachment
Micro-calculus
Cannot reach deposits inside dentinal tubules
Photoacoustic streaming cleans at molecular level
The Protocol

The TGT 8-Step Protocol

Every TGT procedure follows a precise, evidence-based sequence. Each step builds on the last to create the ideal regenerative environment.

Step 1
1
Nd:YAG
Epithelial Removal & Bacterial Kill
Selectively removes 100% of the diseased pocket lining while leaving healthy tissue intact. Kills bacteria and viruses. Seals the pocket.
Step 2A
2A
Er:YAG
Calculus Removal (Conical Tip)
Removes heavy calculus deposits with precision. Always kept parallel to the root surface for safe, thorough removal.
Step 2B
2B
Er:YAG
Fine Calculus Removal (Flat Varian Tip)
Removes fine calculus deposits with precision, especially in furcation areas.
Step 2C
2C
Er:YAG
Flap Relaxation (Radial Firing Tip)
Fires 85% of energy sideways — safely reaching all the way to bone. Gum tissue biologically relaxes and separates from the root.
Step 3A
3A
Cavitron
Ultrasonic Instrumentation
With the flap biologically relaxed and full visibility achieved, ultrasonic instruments complete the final root surface debridement.
Step 3B
3B
Curettes
Final Hand Instrumentation
Curettes complete the final root surface debridement with tactile precision after full biological flap relaxation.
Step 4
4
Er:YAG
Smear Layer & Photoacoustic Streaming
MSP mode creates shock waves that open dentinal tubules and flush micro-calculus no instrument can reach — creating the ideal surface for new attachment.
Step 5
5
Nd:YAG
Fibrin Clot Formation
Creates a stable fibrin clot at the base of each pocket — not just a wound seal, but a regenerative scaffold for new bone and attachment.
The Evidence

Backed by research. Cleared by the FDA.

TGT is not experimental. It is supported by peer-reviewed clinical studies and has received FDA clearance for true periodontal regeneration.

Common Questions

We have answers

Does TGT hurt?
You are fully anesthetized before we begin — you will feel nothing during the procedure. Most patients report that recovery is far more comfortable than they expected.
How many visits will I need?
We treat one arch half per visit, then wait 4–6 weeks before treating the other side. Most patients complete treatment in 2 visits.
Is TGT covered by insurance?
Many dental insurance plans include some coverage for periodontal treatment. Call us at (804) 750-1080 for a benefits check.
When will I see results?
Most patients notice tissue tightening by 6 weeks. Bone changes appear on X-rays at 6 months, with maximum regeneration at 12 months.
Is TGT safe?
Yes. The Fotona TwinLight system has FDA clearance for True Regeneration. The free-running pulsed laser causes less than 10 microns of collateral tissue impact — far less than a scalpel.
What if I see another dentist after treatment?
For 6–9 months after TGT, no other provider should perform periodontal probing, pocket depth measurements, or subgingival scaling in treated areas. We provide a dental provider notice card.
Can I eat normally after treatment?
Soft foods for a few days — yogurt, eggs, fish, soup, mashed potatoes. Most patients are back to normal eating within a week.
Is TGT right for me?
If you have active gum disease — pockets of 4mm or greater with inflammation and bleeding — you are likely a candidate. Call us at (804) 750-1080 to get started.
